Introduction to Roman Blinds:
The clean, modern simplicity of roman blinds has made them extremely popular in today's interior home, offering a stylish and economical alternative to curtains.
Our roman blinds are made up using high quality components and are supplied fully-strung attached to a wooden baton by means of Velcro, therefore, making them easy to remove and clean.
With their clean, sophisticated lines, Roman blinds, or Roman shades as they are sometimes known, are one of the most stylish ways to dress up a window. Roman blinds can be made from all weights of fabric, are usually lined and can be used as a standalone window treatment or added behind curtains, pelmets or valances. These free illustrated sewing instructions will enable you to make your own roman blinds to enhance your window treatments. All blinds are hand-finished down side and bottom hems to produce a professional finish and are lined with white or cream lining (blackout lining is also available) with narrow fibre glass rods sewn into the lining to ensure when the blinds are raised, horizontal pleats are kept regular and straight. If required, blinds can be supplied unlined with the rods sewn into the main fabric.
If the blind width exceeds that of the fabric width then two pieces of fabric are joined either side of a central piece of fabric.
Blinds are fitted either outside the window recess or inside the window recess with left or right cord pull.Roman shades have the look and feel of draperies, but are as practical as a cellular blind. Made from woven fabric, these blinds can be raised or lowered like a blind. They create privacy while allowing light in from the outside. Roman Shades are available in either teardrop (also known as hobbled) or flat fold styles. Roman Shades fit virtually every setting, whether elegant or casual.Roman blinds use wooden poles to keep the pleats even. They suit a variety of windows and use very little fabric. As with all blinds, be careful when choosing patterned fabrics; you'll have to centre any large patterns and position stripes evenly. You'll need: Top fabric Lining fabric (tightly woven cotton sateen or a plain-coloured glazed chintz). For measurements see step 1. Matching sewing threads 4-8 lengths 12mm-diameter cotton dowelling 20-40 small plastic rings Nylon cord (approx 10-12 times the length of blind) 5cm x 2cm wooden batten cut to the same measurement as the width of the blind Angle brackets and screws to fix batten 4-6 screw eyelets Brass cleat Acorn or similar to keep cord ends together Basic sewing kit Large pair of scissors Sewing machine Metre ruler and metal tape measure Soft pencil Tacks and hammer or staples and staple gun Drill Screwdriver Screws Wallplugs Small saw Here's how: 1. Measure how wide you want the blind to be. As most furnishing fabrics are 137cm wide, one width of fabric will be adequate for most blinds. If it's to sit inside the recess simply measure from one edge of the recess to the other, adding 3cm for seams. If it's to hang outside the recess (on the wall or from the ceiling) add the 3cm for seams and an extra 5cm extra on each side. Also measure the drop required for the fabric (from top of window to sill) adding 10-15cm for seams and hanging allowance. If the blind sits outside the recess (no more than 15cm above and 5cm below the sill) add an extra 10-15cm. If choosing fabric with a large pattern, buy extra fabric so the pattern can be positioned as you want it. They have several options to choose from including top-down/bottom up, and continuous cord loop, providing you with great flexibility. These superb Roman blinds represent stunning value for money and are available in a great new range of woven woods in adddition to our natural fabric range. As the blind is raised the fabric pleats giving the classic Roman blind look, this means that the drop will not require trimming. Due to the special nature of these blinds the width is not able to be adjusted.
Introduction to Roll-up Blinds....
A minimal window treatment...
These blinds are perfect for any window especially a series of windows or bay.
The blind is controlled with a simple cord and cleat mechanism with chunky glass rings attached to the top allowing the cord to glide smoothly.
The blind is attached to a wooden batten with touch and close tape.
These blinds are made so when dropped to full window length - a "rolled up" effect is still shown at the bottom - of course they can be totally flat if this is desired. All our fabrics can be used except muslin - woven stirpes are especially good as they have a 'reverse' effect.
These blinds are not lined and cannot have fabric widths joined together.

Measuring....
Its simple! A metal tape measure should be used for accuracy. Just follow these straightforward instructions below:
Outer Recess:
• measure the width from a to b and add 10cm to allow for the blind to give sufficient overlap each side of the window.
• measure the length from c to d from where the blind is to start, usually 10cm above the window, and where the blind is to finish, usually, 5cm below the window.
Inner Recess:
Make sure there are no obstructions eg window levers which would affect the smooth operation of the blind.
• measure the width from a to b and subtract 2cm for clearance.
• measure the length from c to d.
• As a precaution take three measurements for the width and length left, right and centre and record the smallest measurement.
These measurements are a suggested guide only - please feel free to adjust accordingly..
